Pravah Trio

Pravah Trio creates contemporary improvised music drawing on three musical traditions. Their compositions range from intense, overwhelming, rhythmic explorations to soft, mesmeric, melody rich wanderings.

At each meeting Pravah Trio seeks to create new music, always starting with a simple idea, then expanding, adding and changing, being drawn along, celebrating both the uncertain and bold.

about us

Tony Hole - Handpan

Tony is a multi-instrumentalist musician, composer and improviser who performs with several world fusion ensembles. While piano is his first instrument, he came to percussion through West African drumming in Ghana and Indian Carnatic drumming in South India.  In Pravah Trio, Tony plays the handpan, bringing together his backgrounds in melody and rhythm. He is an accredited teacher in both InterPlay improvisational performance and TaKeTiNa group rhythm process.

Mahzad Fard (Maz) - Tonbak and Daf

Iranian-born, Australia-based percussionist Mahzad has a deep love for rhythm, collaboration and the thrill, and occasional chaos, of improvisation. She studied Daf and Tonbak with respected musicians in Iran. She has performed with a range of local musicians and since joining Pravah has moved away from memorised music in favour of spontaneity. These days, she lets rhythm lead the way, following the flow of the music.

Simon Gill - Sitar

Simon has played sitar since the early 1990s and has been fortunate to study Nth Indian Classical music in Adelaide with eminent sitar maestro Alan Posselt. Regular travel to India has given opportunities to imbibe the music and to perform in different places, such as Kolkata, Benares and Cochin. Simon performs regularly in a variety of contexts and struggles to contemplate what life would be like without a daily dose of sitar.
